Watcher's Council best posts week ending October 13
The Watcher's Council selected these best posts from among those nominated for the week ending October 13.
Wallo World's fine Controversy, Christians and Condemnation won, the second week in a row a tiebreaker was slung around to settle things. Bill makes this point:
I mean, if I can assume that Pat Robertson is a Christian despite his endorsement of political assassination, I guess I can assume Evangeline Lilly is a Christian despite the skimpy outfits and the rumor that she’s a “pottymouth.”
Excellent point! In George We Trust? at Right Wing Nut House placed.
Both [Thomas] Lifson and blogger/radio host Hugh Hewitt make the same argument: Trust George. When it comes right down to it, pragmatic conservatives have very little choice. It’s not like they’re going to abandon Republicans and vote Democratic.
I hope I don't get kicked out of the Council for this, but I vote for Democrats all the time. I'm tickled to be able to say I voted for Capt. Janeway's husband and not Bob "Bob" Taft in 2002; I voted to fire the first President Bush for being weak and ineffective outside the Gulf region. As things stand right this second, I'm more likely to vote for whoever runs against Mike DeWine than for the incumbent. Anti-incumbency is a thoroughly American virtue.
The larger point being that the moment we feel we have to support a party because we have no choice is the very moment we need to hold our noses (if necessary) and vote the other way. The only thing encouraging elected officials to do what their constituents want is the threat of being removed from power, after all.
But back to the voting. Legion at Waiter Rant was named best non-Council post in a week where the top seven vote getters were separated by only a point. Second place was LaShawn Barber's post Insulation. See the complete list of winners and voting results here.
UPDATE: There's a seat open on the Council. Visit Watcher for details (and/or links to details). Hurry, I'm tired of getting the door and getting coffee for everybody as the junior member!
UPDATE II: A podcast of the voting results, with excerpts from the four top finishers, is available here (12 minute, 11,174 KB mp3).
