Watcher's Council best posts week ending Oct. 20

The Watcher's Council selected these best posts from among those nominated for the week ending October 20.

A Sketch History of U.S. Military Bases in the Middle East: The Overthrow of Mossadegh at The Glittering Eye got my vote and won on a tiebreaker.

For many people and, especially, the people of the Middle East [the overthrow of the Mossadegh goivernment in Iran and its replacement by the Shah] suggested that the United States was little different in pursuing its interests by interefering in the internal affairs of Middle Eastern countries than the old colonial powers had been. And for the United States it suggested that if we were to be able to oppose the advance of the Soviet Union, we would need to be involved with the Middle East to a significantly greater extent than we had been historically.

Gates of Vienna's The Counterterrorism Blog Looks Into the Face of Evil placed.

Iraqis Preparing to Decide... at Iraq the Model won best non-Council post.

Approving this draft is not the end goal, it’s a step among others in this process of evolution in Iraq and it’s going to be the gate to more steps until we reach the day when we have a constitution that satisfies and serves the greatest majority of the people.

Three posts tied for second: Q and O's Steps to Limited Government, the comprehensive Chemical Weapons, Drug Smuggling, and Other Crimes of the Yemeni Dictator at Armies of Liberation and an interview with Andrew Bostom, author of The Legacy of Jihad, at Red State.

In other news, Carnival of Liberty stalwart Eric's Grumbles From the Grave has taken a seat on the Council, which is cool.
