Arming Colombia
May, 2005: Flagship libertarian site mocks free market-exploiting entrepreneurial endeavor because it's selling uncool clothes. August, 2005: Libertarians applaud federal taxpayer-funded subsidies for AIDS education because it will help prostitutes. It's getting so these "competing principles" stories are entirely too predictable.
So here comes the town of Tulua, Colombia, where the guys in charge want to force anyone over 14 to carry a condom, "just as they carry ID cards, or face a fine." When I first read about this, I wondered how they'd come out on it at Reason, then I stopped wondering when I saw that somebody called Father Jesus Velasquez is riled up about it. The padre doesn't help matters by saying things like "it would be like selling guns on the streets." Well, that was a short editorial board meeting! Expect a Kerry Howley post about overbearing Catholics getting in the way of progress in Tulua.
