A special prosecutor for the NSA wiretap thing

Jennifer Van Bergen, "a journalist with a law degree" -- hey, me too! -- argues that "a special prosecutor should be appointed as soon as possible" to prove the President's malfeasance with regard to the surveillance of American citizens by the National Security Agency in violation of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act.

The reasons why Democrats won't push for this in a midterm election year are obvious, so Van Bergen may have to wait till smart Republicans spearhead the appointment of a special prosecutor.

Republican Senators up for re-election couldn't ask for a better boost than sensational, wall-to-wall television coverage of an investigation into whether the President went too far trying to prevent another large-scale terrorist attack on America.

There should be Senate hearings of some sort, too!

SEN. LEAHY (nervously shifting in his seat): I don't really have any questions for this witness.

SEN. MCCAIN: Then can I have your time? Mr. Jones, as an NSA mail room clerk you were employed by the agency that went to great lengths to try and find out about and prevent terrorist attacks against America, weren't you?

But of course most Democrats wouldn't shift nervously in their seats, they'd be full-bore RSC tools, raising money and rousing the base with the goal of pinning on George W. Bush once and for all the label of "person who is overeager to prevent terrorist attacks." Or whatever.

This is not the best idea ever.
